DAVID GOOD'S "MENAGERIE!" ©2001 by David D. Good SPOILERS WALKTHROUGH - DO NOT READ!!! This is basically a step by step walkthrough of David Good's "Menagerie!". Warning - this is not a list of subtle tips. Major spoilers. Do not read this walkthrough unless you absolutely need help. Your name is Willow Murphy, (Willow means tree, Murphy means warrior) and you are an animal lover who works for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). In other words, you're a bleeding-heart liberal. Your goal is to get videotape of the animals at the circus, whom you suspect are mistreated. At the beginning of the game, decide to play EASY, MEDIUM or HARD level. The game defaults to MEDIUM. Once you have selected EASY or HARD, you need to restart the game to choose a different level. You can only choose EASY or HARD prior to any scoring. You start at the circus midway. You have $2, but the ticket to get in to the circus costs much more. You have enough money to buy some game tokens at the entrance if you want. If you buy 4 tokens at a cost of 2 for $1, you can play the Duck Pond game in the East Midway. On the 4th try, you win a free admission ticket. However, now you have no money. Instead, go south and play the Wheel of Fortune. You will win $10, leaving you with a grand total of $11. Go to the ticket booth and buy tokens. 14 tokens is adequate to play all the games. If you play wheel of fortune more than once and you will just lose money (and lose points). Oh, you can also sell tokens back to Marie the ticket lady. Handy if you blew all your money on tokens and dont have enough to buy the peanuts from the vendor. At the duck pond, play 4 times and win your ticket. Unfortunately, a pickpocket bumps into you and steals your video camera. You'll wander through the game collecting your camera, camera case, battery and videotape. At the ring toss, play (3 rings for 1 token) to win a coke. Wemmie is wandering amongst the midway games, and you can talk to her. But she is nonresponsive unless you buy her cracker jacks. If you go west from the Midway to the Funhouse (it costs 1 token, by the way), you can show Bill the mirror (that makes the annoying calliope music stop), give him the popcorn, and steal his tip jar for an additional $5. But watch out, Skippy the Clown is in the funhouse and he's a scary dude. Not only will he try to gather up the tip money too, he will actually try and scare you sometimes. If you go west from the South Midway you will find a small arcade with a pinball game and a ms pac-man game. You can plunk tokens into them and play them if you want. To play the pinball game you must ask Zap about the pinball game, and to play the Ms Pacman you need to examine it then plug it in. But be careful, playing arcade games isn't all that good for your health - or safety. Go east from the East Midway into the fortune teller's tent. Ask for a reading, but she will charge you some tokens. If you look at the cards she lays out on the table it will tell you a bit about each tarot card. The smart player will catch the not-too-subtle foreshadowing later on. If you ask for a reading before visiting Bill, the gypsy complains she can't concentrate with all that music outside. South from the East Midway or east from the South Midway takes you to an outdoor stage, where you'll see Cecily the belly dancer. Give cecily a tip and she will let you tuck $1 in her bra, plus you get some bonus points. Now that you have your ticket you can go north from the Midway to the entrance and big top. You'll find the east bleachers, west bleachers, center ring and platform in the tent itself. If you sit on the bleachers, the acts begin. A Vendor wanders the tent and midway. You can buy cracker jacks, peanuts, or popcorn from him. Cracker Jacks are $2, the others $1 each. In the hard version, the food costs more. There should be a prize in the CJ box - a suprise. If you head through the rear entrance of the tent, you'll find a backstage area, some dressing rooms and animal cages. You can look at the cages and it will reveal some of the animals' names. You might run into Barb the animal trainer, who will respond to questions about the animals. It's a real bad idea to open the cages, but since you an animal lover, you might think that you'll release the gentle animals. Save first. If you've successfully found your videocamera equipment, put the tape and the battery in the camera, then film the animals. Still stuck on finding the video equipment? Scroll to the end of this to find out where they are. Once you have filmed the animals, you can wander around the circus more trying to pick up points you missed, or you can type "go home" to drive your car home, which will produce the winning result of the game. The winning end game message varies slightly depending on how many of the bonus points you were able to rack up. If you don't succeed in filming the animals, the game will come to an abrupt ending 100-150 moves into the game when you encounter Skippy the Disgruntled Clown. Oops. If you run out of money, you can sell your scored points to Marie the ticket lady. In the main entrance, you can type something like "sell 10 points" or "sell 20 points" and she will give you $1 for every 10 points you want to sell. You can sell up to 50 points at a time, you must sell in numbers divisible by 10. In hard mode, you may only sell 10 points and no more. You cannot purchase back points you have sold. MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: The battery is on the platform where the aerial acts launch. The camera is in the trunk of clown props in the clown dressing room. Unfortunately the trunk is locked with a combination lock (except in "easy" mode, where it is unlocked). What could the combination be? You had a reading from the Gypsy, didn't you? What cards were drawn for you? The video tape is in the lion's cage. You must "ask barb about video tape" in order to retreive it. Barb must be in the Animal Cages room at the time. The game player Zap has the camera case (required to use the camera in HARD mode). You must give him the sack of popcorn to obtain it. Note that the vendor food prices are increased in the HARD game. EXTRA POINTS PUZZLE (not required to complete game) If you search/examine/look under the east bleachers, you will see movement. Then you are able to go "down" from the east bleachers to "under the bleachers". Here you meet Pringle the monkey. Give Pringle the bag of peanuts you bought from Joe the vendor. Pringles dashes off to eat them and drops the toy knife he is carrying. Later, give the toy knife to Zippo the clown cowboy for points, or sell the knife to Marie the ticket lady if you are short on cash. You may later encounter Pringle in the dressing rooms. In the easy mode, Pringles wanders the bigtop, and is easier to find.
