Syphel seems completely unconcerned with being unarmed, however. While you can manage just fine against a couple of bandits unarmed, you were trained with swords and bows back in Sedel. It'll probably bruise, but you aren't seriously hurt. "I'm not frail," you defend, "I... How did you do that?" For the rest of your time in town, Syphel teaches you some defensive unarmed techniques. You spend some time visiting with Syphel. The more you are around him, the more you realize how far off he is from your average view of a Reaver. He's rather laid back and friendly, not only to you, but to everyone in town. If you didn't know any better, you'd think he was a genuinely nice guy. The fact still remains that he is one of the Empire's Reavers, and whatever he did to gain that title was probably no small feat.
