END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 44 You take a running start and hurl yourself at the fence. The watch dog immediately abandons the bone and charges. Foaming mouth agape, he leaps and gives you a big lick on the face and walks away wagging his tail. (Well, it IS Christmas, you know.) You climb the rest of the way over the fence. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 45 You take a running start and hurl yourself at the fence. After only 17 tries, you manage to scramble and claw your way to the top and drop to the ground on the other side. Pulling splinters out of your pants, you look around. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 46 You head off down a small side tunnel to the $VERB$. After wandering around in the dark for several minutes, you feel a hairy paw on your shoulder and a dull, guttural noise next to your ear. Instinctively, you jump in the opposite direction, falling down a wet limestone passage way into a still lower cavern. After several false starts, you grope your way to a spot where you see a point of light overhead. Fortunately for you, a set of natural formations offers a stairway that leads you back out into the main cave through an opening in the opposite wall from where you wandered in. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 47 You decide to do a few wind sprints up and down Mt. Everest as long as you are here. That gets the old circulation going. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 50 You stroll over to the edge of the dock and fall in. Luckily, your suit dries quickly in the warm night air. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 51 Yep. You check around and, sure enough, not a mouse is stirring. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 55 You look around a little, but find nothing that interests you other than the items on special. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 57 With very little urging, the Julebrock takes to the air and whisks you over the fjord and through your rounds. You zip through the more Northerly Scandinavian countries, delivering gifts, nibbling on the ginger snaps, julekake, and hjortetkake, and following all the Julafton traditions. Finally finished with your duties as the Norwegian Nisse and Swedish Tomten, you turn Southward across the Skagerrak toward Denmark. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 59 Your mittened hand passes through the sleigh -- or is it the other way around? Your hand itself seems to be changing into something more like a . . . HOOF! Suddenly the air clears around you and you find yourself in a desert. A quick look around confirms your suspicion. You are now the Syrian Christmas camel. (Local tradition, you know -- presents are delivered by one of the three wise men's camels.) You go about your duties as best you can, then start looking around for a way to get to your next stop (and to get back onto your own TWO feet.) END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 62 With the cat in tow, you continue your rounds, finally making your way down to Germany where you ditch the goat. (OK, you send it back to wherever these Christmas characters hang out during the off-season. Personally, I think it's Rudolph in disguise picking up a few extra bucks -- no pun intended -- while your back is turned.) As Sankt Klass, you and your attendant, Knecht Ruprecht, go over in a big way. There are Christmas trees everywhere, shoes to fill with toys, windows decorated with holly, laurel, ivy, pine and moss. When you finish, you look around for a ferry terminal. After all, your next stop is the Netherlands and you are expected to arrive on a ferry riding a snowy horse. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 66 You glance around the room, check out the gift shop and magazine rack, thumb through a few postcards, then walk back over to the ticket window. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 67 You mount the snowy horse and as if by magic (this could get monotonous), the ferry boat docks at Amsterdam. You make your traditional entrance to the Netherlands as Sinter Klaas and Dudley appears at your side appropriately outfitted as Black Peter. After dismounting, you go about your rounds. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 68 You either like midnight winter swims or are just getting senile, because you step right off the sidewalk into the chilly waters of the canal. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 71 You turn and try to exit back to the school room, but the door has been slammed and locked. From outside, you hear giggling school children, no doubt certain that they have captured the schoolmaster in a classic holiday prank (as is the custom in this country). END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 76 This just isn't your night. In your hurry to get out of the shack, you forgot that the natives in this lowland area build their homes on top of wooden poles to keep them cooler. You step out into empty space and plummet to the ground. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 80 You walk out into the surf and immediately retreat. That's COLD! END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 81 You board the tram, but are forced to get back off when the motorman finds that you do not have any tokens. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 82 You walk around outside the observatory, admiring the magnificent architecture. You see a variety of clocks and time measurement devices through various laboratory windows. Finally, your wanderings bring you back full circle. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 83 You push on the bedroom door, but the creak of the hinges causes the sounds from the room to become more fitful and you abandon the effort. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 84 You push on down the slope until you reach a small road that leads on to a village. Here, you assume your role as PerŠ No‰l and proceed to distribute presents as you work your way West. Your final stop is a small farm house near the coast. You put the last of the small presents in the children's wooden sabots, then stop to look around the room. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 85 The ice is almost impossible to walk on as you make your way toward the edge of the canal. Wobbling uncertainly, you reach for the canal wall. Suddenly, your feet shoot out from under you and you slide and spin unceremoniously out to the center of the frozen channel. Black Peter peers over the edge, shakes his head at your antics, then shuffles off to do whatever it is that sidekicks do while the hero is in a tight spot all by himself. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 87 As you start to jump back into the sleigh, Dudley looks up and says, "Wrong." While you are getting back out, the elf straightens up (as much as an elf can straighten up) and tells you that the off left hassle bender has sprundged from the major twitch leaving an imbalance in the cross-murphys, so the team can't pull the sleigh till it's fixed. You make a mental note that Dudley needs a correspondence course in harness rigging, or needs to quit buying his bubble gum in bulk. Looking for yourself, you see that there is a ring missing from Prancer's traces. Now where are you going to find a brass ring around here? END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 88 OK. You want something to happen here? Well then, there is a sudden typhoon and earthquake. A giant eclipse blots out all the stars and planets and everything. The rocks all around you turn into insurance salesmen and a wave of army ants crests the hill. Suddenly, your mother steps in and takes your Nintendo away and you have to get back to business. How was that? END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 94 You head off West to make your rounds. The streets are lined with bright flowers and candles and the Nacimientos are everywhere. You move quickly from house to house distributing the small presents the children are expecting. You are tiptoing back out of the last house when you hear a roar approaching down the street. You duck back into the shadows just in time to see a torrent of teenagers come barreling down the street on roller skates. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 95 You head off toward the $VERB$ edge of the roof, but lose your footing on the slippery roof tiles. You sail over the edge into the empty night air. Luckily, you land on a padded lawn chair, which teeter-totters, sending a small tray sailing into the air like a Frisbee. The tray clips a clothes line, sending a pillowcase sailing like a small ghost over the face of the sleeping family dog. The startled animal jumps up, bumping its head against the top of the dog house dropping its chin into the water dish. This sends a splash of water against an electrical outlet, short-circuiting the garage door opener. The door flies up, sending the tricycle carelessly left overnight in the driveway racing down the lawn where it bashes into a heavy concrete birdbath, tipping it over onto the foot of the lawn chair, causing it to totter-teeter and throw you back up onto the roof. Rube Goldberg, eat your heart out. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 96 You lay down the surfboard and jump on. The second you stand erect, the force of the wind on your back starts the surf board sliding across the loose sand toward the gentle slope. You go faster and faster caroming and dodging around sandy hillocks and rock outcroppings. The sand sings and hisses as it shoots from under the board. Suddenly, you see the base of a sheer cliff directly ahead. You bring the board a full 90ø about and lay it up on edge sending a magnificent shower of sand dead ahead to stop your headlong plunge. The sand hisses like a den of snakes and you feel the gravel and rocks catching and kicking the edge of the board, then with a liver-bruising shock, you crash into the rock wall. You slowly push the overturned board off your body and rise to your feet. You look around while shaking sand out of every joint and seam. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 98 You think it over for a moment then decide to check out the warehouse. Inside, you see stacks of Perma-Slip Banana Peels, Sixteen-Ton Weights, Earthquake Pills, Exploding Cigars, Roadrunner Seed, and Squirting Flowers. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 99 You look around for a way down the mountain but the sides are just too steep. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 100 You flip the piece of rope over the main cable and start your slide down to the city below. How were you to know that rope was a bungee cord? After all, there isn't anything high enough to jump off of at the North Pole, and the guy at Trader Joe's certainly didn't warn you. Anyway, the slide down starts to look less and less like a stunt from a James Bond movie and more and more like a demonstration for a Slinky or Yo-yo. When you finally reach the bottom, you make a graceful 17 point landing and casually walk over to the waiting sleigh. Dusting your sleeves nonchalantly, you tell Dudley, "I meant to do that". You gather your pride and set off to go about your rounds, studiously ignoring Dudley's suppressed giggles. Eventually you finish up. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 101 Just for the fun of it, you snoop around a little. Opening the door of a convenient broom closet just a crack you see a star reporter changing into a red, yellow and blue costume. You close the door again before you are noticed. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 104 You push out into the crowd and roar down the street, completely unnoticed by the youngsters (after all they are teenagers - why should they pay attention to someone over 30 - and your are well over 30). After several miles of deafening singing and skate-wheel rumbling, you veer off into the alley where you left the sleigh. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 106 As you clamber back to the sleigh, it completely dissolves from view. In fact, the entire world fades from sight leaving you in a swirling darkness. Gradually, the swirling becomes tangible and cold. Squinting your eyes you see that you are sitting in the middle of a city street. There is only a faint glow from the gas street lights. A GAS light? "What city is this?" you wonder, but your thoughts are cut short by the sight of a late night horse- drawn street car bearing down on you. A quick jump gets you out of harms way and onto the sidewalk. Looking up, you see that you are next to a newspaper office. "Maybe I can find out where I am in there." Going in, you look at one of the papers on the counter and read, "HARPERS WEEKLY - published New York - December 17, 1863." 1863!! You run quickly back into the street, sure enough, through the blowing snow, you see gas street lights, hitching posts, civil war conscription posters, street car tracks. A glance at your costume confirms it. You are wearing a broad-brimmed Dutch hat and Flemish trunk hose, the image of St. Nicholas portrayed by Washington Irving at the beginning of the 19th century. You are stuck in 1863, before you were ever invented. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 107 You take a few minutes looking around at the Big Apple in her Christmas finery. You drop by the late night skaters at the Rockerfeller Plaza, check out Times Square and look in the windows of Macey's. Being back on 34th street brings back memories of that time a few years ago when you met that little girl and. . . . Your reminiscences are cut short by the realization of the time and you hurry back to the waiting sleigh. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 110 You take a few minutes to hit a local eatery. You just couldn't pass up those traditional midnight tamales. You do pass on the desert, though. You wised up long ago to the also-traditional pranks like mustard in the donuts. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 111 As long as you are stopped, you take a short side trip to the nearby country of Mooselvania located on an island between the US and Canada. You remember the post-doctoral work you did there at Wossamotta U. on pulling rabbits out of hats. When you return to the sleigh, nothing much has changed. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 112 As you clamber back to the sleigh, it completely dissolves form view. In fact, the entire world fades from sight leaving your in a swirling darkness. Suddenly, the soundless darkness is replaced by a softer darkness of a starry night. You hear the sound of a stiff wind blowing across the fields. Looking up, you see a sign. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 114 You take a few minutes to island hop and do some touristing. These islands are still as fascinating as they were to Charles Darwin when he visited them on the Beagle. There are species of animals found here that exist nowhere else in the world. You see low-pressure insurance salesmen, ethical lawyers, honest politicians, intelligent sales clerks, fast waitresses, friendly IRS agents, and even a witty programmer. (These are just jokes, now. I don't need a lot of editorial replies, OK?) END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 115 You stumble around in the maze of Inca tunnels until you finally break back out into the clearing where the sleigh is sitting. You wait patiently a while, then start tapping your toe impatiently. Next you break into pacing and slapping your hands together behind your back. At last you give up waiting for anything exciting to happen out here and you head back into the maze. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 118 You wander up and down the beach a while, soaking up the clear night air, then return to the boat END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 120 Ignoring all of the good advice that your mommy ever gave you about the evils of gambling, you decide to attempt the rigged game. In no time at all, you have lost your five dollars and have no way to pay the airport exit tax. You spend the rest of the year earning your ten dollars by commuting to a nearby island where you wear white polyester suits and yell, "De plane, de plane. Boss, de plane" from a small bell tower. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 121 You find that the snow drifts are too high for you to go in that direction. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 122 You start to head along the street to look at the other sights but the wet cement clings to your boots. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 124 The cliff seemed rugged but passable when you started out, but the farther you go the more you reevaluate your decision. At every step rocks and showers of loose sand shift from beneath your feet. You start clinging to the face of the cliff when the last trace of a path disappears. Looking up, you see that you are only a few feet from the top rim and you concentrate all your efforts to get back up to level ground. With one last desperate scramble, you pull yourself up over the edge and roll away as an entire section caves in and lazily drifts downward in the low Martian gravity. You decide to leave the mountain climbing to mountain goats or Martian goats or whatever in the future. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 126 You push the button. The word HOMER on the label flashes green once and you find yourself sitting beside a single lane road on a cold, barren landscape. Unfortunately, your coat snags on the control panel as you pass and just as you step onto one of the primary focus platforms, you are engulfed in a shimmer of blue and gold light. When the light fades, you look down and see that you have acquired the right forelimb and leg of a fly. Quickly you buzz over to the controls and set them for reverse transport and jump back over to the platform. This time when the light fades you find that you have the LEFT forelimb and leg of a fly. Once again you fiddle with the controls and emerge with the head of an elk and three vertebrae of a shriner. After many more attempts, you emerge your old self again (except for a cute new dimple that you decided to keep) and you vow NOT to step into there again. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 129 You start to look around when you hear, "TAP - TAP - TAP - WHOOSH Testing, one, two three. Is this thing on? Oh. Ahem. Who dares enter the presence of the might Oz?" You turn back toward the throne. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 130 Too late you realize your mistake. You have lost track of direction and can no longer see anything on the horizon. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 132 You try to look around, but the ground is too soggy. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 135 You shinny carefully up the icy pole. At the very top you are able to see a faint speck the horizon in one direction. Taking careful note of the direction, you slide down the pole and start off toward it. END_SPECIAL SPECIAL 138 You start to enter the sleigh, but the Con Artist flips an official ID in front of your face too fast to read and says, "Not so fast there Sandy. I'm the tax collector on this island and there's a ten dollar airport exit tax. Either you pay up or you don't leave." "But, there isn't any airport," you protest. "That's another matter altogether," he throws backs. "Surely you don't want to be stranded here doing dumb puns the rest of the year?"
