"Words of Power" is a Glulx game. In order to play it, you will need an interpreter for your particular operating system. You can find interpreters for most platforms at http://www.ifarchive.org or ftp://ftp.ifarchive.org in the if-archive/programming/glulx/interpreters/glulxe directory The game archive should contain this file, two PDF documents and a Blorb file with the game itself. The PDF documents are password-protected. During play, the game will tell you what password to use for which document. "Words of Power" is designed to be played on a full featured interpreter. It makes use of many Glk features: colors, graphics, music, multiple windows and hyperlinks. Here are some suggestions for various interpreters. WinGlulxe: This is my interpreter of choice, despite my dislike of the OS. It supports all the features needed by Words of Power and I suggest using the latest release, since some of the earlier versions have problems playing music. Words of Power comes with a .cfg file that will set the proper window size upon startup, but will disable the window caption. You can still drag the window around your screen by clicking on the status bar. If you don't like how it looks, you can delete or rename the words.cfg file, then resize the main window to fit the opening screen. DOS: I only have Caldera OpenDOS 7, whose DPMI support is a bit strange. The graphical interpreter crashes my box. The text-only interpreter works. YMMV. MacGlulxe: MacGlk doesn't support (at the time of writing) MOD music. You should make sure that style hints are enabled. If you hate my choice of colors, you can disable color style hints, but I recommend leaving the justification style hints enabled, otherwise the conversation options will look really strange. At startup, please resize the window to fit the opening screen. Unix: If it works on your flavor of Unix, a GtkGlk based terp will give better results. It's not very stable and it doesn't support hyperlinks, but it supports style hints and the text looks better. A small warning: on my machine, any attempts to change window proportions freezes the X server. For best results, please resize the main window to fit the opening screen. An XGlk terp will play the music if you used the patched version of Xglk, but it won't interpret the style hints and the conversation options will be force justified, which looks plain ugly. In addition, it seems there's a memory leak in the (non-functional) style hint code. If you want to use it, I recommend maximizing the terp window. Term-based glulxe works, but you will have neither graphics nor sound. PocketPC/WinCE: I don't recommend playing Words of Power on version 0.1 of pGlulxe. Further releases of the game and/or terp may offer better support, but I can't guarantee it. Copyrights: "Words of Power" is free. You can do pretty much whatever you want with it. However, the music embedded in the game is not free. All songs are copyrighted by their authors and are used in the game with their permission. If you want to use any of the songs for other purposes, you should contact the artists directly.
