35TH ANNIVERSARY release bundle: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Released on 17/7/24 via IFTF... happy birthday Dad! Both parts of this game are released without any kind of warranty or guarantees. The games should work without any issues, but no promises! If you have the ability to transform the ZX Spectrum tap files to a real cassette tape and run it on genuine Sinclair hardware, then it should work fine but that hasn't been tested at all. Also note that ONLY the ZX Spectrum version is included in this bundle. Versions for other platforms might be released in the future. You never know! Finally, just to emphasise that Part 2 can only be played by firstly loading a valid save game from the end of Part 1 using the save routine built into the game (and automatically triggered when you reach the conclusion of Part 1). So, What do you get in the ZIP archive file? readme.txt (what you're reading right now!) \35TH ALARIC-PT1-35TH.TAP ALARIC-PT2-35TH.TAP SAVES.tzx ALARIC-PT1+PT2-35TH-ZX-INLAY-COVER.png ALARIC-PT1+PT2-35TH-ZX-INLAY--REVERSE.png \35TH\SOLUTIONS.ZIP ALARIC-PT1-35TH-MAP.png ALARIC-PT1-35TH-SOL.txt ALARIC-PT2-35TH-MAP.png ALARIC-PT2-35TH-SOL.txt \original a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-pt2.dsk a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-pt2-inlay.jpg a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-side-a.jpg a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-v2.8.tzx a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-v3.0.tzx a-legacy-for-alaric-pt2-side-b.jpg a-legacy-for-alaric-pt2-v4.3-2.3.tzx the-magic-isle-zenobi-sales-a4.jpg zenobi-newsletter-9201.jpg \original\solutions a-legacy-for-alaric-hints-zenobi.pdf a-legacy-for-alaric-pt1-sol.txt a-legacy-for-alaric-pt2-sol.txt New 2024 35th Anniversary ZX Spectrum releases - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A LEGACY FOR ALARIC - PART 1: THE INITIATION, and PART 2: THE MAGIC ISLE in brand new ZX Spectrum editions to help mark the 35th anniversary of PART 1 in 1989. The tape inlay is provided to show what it could look like. The SAVES.tzx tape file is for saving your game when you complete the end of Part 1. You need to load this in at the start of Part 2 to be able to continue. It's fine to use emulator snapshots up until the very end, but Part 2 can't be played without an emulated cassette file with a valid save game recorded to it. Consult the instructions in your favourite ZX Spectrum emulator on how to swap out emulated cassette files during play (although you could save to the game tape file if you want, but have a copy of the original .TAP file somewhere else as well, just in case!) Original ZX Spectrum releases - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A Legacy For Alaric (v2.8 NOT FOR RESALE).tzx - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For reasons never explained to me, Zenobi initially released a beta version of A LEGACY FOR ALARIC rather than v3 which I sent over three weeks later. This tzx is version 2.8 (February 20th 1989. NOT FOR RESALE), released by Zenobi on cassette. It also appears on the official disk release with Part 2. Note: I originally gave permission for the game to be available on World of Spectrum (WOS) but years later when WOS ownership changed hands I explicitly removed that permission, which was ignored by the new custodians and has remained available online ever since. This version IS NOT to be made available on WOS. A Legacy for Alaric-V3 (110389).tzx - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here is the (three weeks) later version of the game, compiled from the original PAWS database file from 1989 some 35 years later. I'll be honest here and admit that I've not played this all the way through in years, and don't recall what the differences are. A preliminary glance reveals obvious changes in the text (which often happened during development as the game database on the ZX Spectrum would often get too large and the game would therefore not compile in PAWS). For example, the squirrel is no longer a secret squirrel (a reference to an old seventies cartoon series I remember watching as a child). Note: An emulator snapshot of version 3 (in Z80 format) later became available on WOS. How that happened was a mystery at first, but on reflection I might have created that file many years ago for Zenobi. When emulating a ZX Spectrum first became a reality on a PC in the early 1990s, John Wilson (Zenobi) asked me to create Z80 snapshots of all of his published games, so he could effectively release them on 3.5" disk for PC owners along with a free shareware ZX Spectrum emulator (which might have been the MSDOS shareware version of the emulator called Z80). At that time Zenobi didn't have access to a PC. I might have supplied him with the version 3 of part 1 as part of that process, but here it is, in its original (never been released) tzx tape form. There is no loading/title screen as that would have been added by Zenobi after I had supplied the v3 PAWS database file. The Magic Isle.tzx - - - - - - - - - - This is the only release version (Game version 4.3 April 1990 - WP/BG v2.3 July 1991) as far as I know. My original cassette release doesn't load (it errors a few seconds before the end and trying to fix it digitally fails miserably!). I did discover at home a cassette which allegedly contained my PAWS database for THE MAGIC ISLE dated July 1991, but unfortunately it has two sections that were accidentally over-written, so is incomplete and unusable. I vaguely recall that this was one of the factors in me giving up on part 2 in exasperation, as I had ruined the only copy I had of the current WIP game file. Zenobi used a much earlier version I had sent them and got someone else to get it into a state fit for release. The someone else might have been Walter Pooley, but I was never told who actually did it. The only clues are the initials WP and BG. It also appears on the official disk release with Part 1. Note: As with Part 1, I originally gave permission for the game to be available on World of Spectrum (WOS), but years later when WOS ownership changed hands I explicitly removed that permission, which was ignored by the new custodians and has remained available online ever since. This version IS NOT to be made available on WOS. A Legacy For Alaric (pt1+pt2).dsk - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The official disk release, with part 1 (version 2.8 February 20th 1989. NOT FOR RESALE.) and part 2 (Game version 4.3 April 1990 - WP/BG v2.3 July 1991). This was available from late 1991/early 1992. - - - ZX Vega - - - - Both games were included with the ZX Vega console product released via crowd-funding in 2015. Unfortunately, the original agreement between Zenobi and Retro Computers Ltd was reached without any consultation with the adventure authors, and no royalty payments from RCL were received by Zenobi (confirmed in an email dated February 2017). Enjoy! :-)
