;Oklib's Revenge v0.49 9.10.92 MAXIMUM_SCORE 100 INTRO "Okay, lads," said the Sergeant, looking you and your fellow guards slowly up and down while you looked at the toes of your boots, shuffled your feet and wished you were somewhere else ... anywhere else. You just KNEW that Oklib was looking straight at you. "All I want is a volunteer to go and find this missing staff of the King's. I'm sure you've all seen the posters about?" You have, of course, but Rule 1 in the Palace Guards' Union Rule Book says 'Never (repeat, never) volunteer for anything'. You've read the rule book a lot. Perhaps it's because you keep quoting from it that Oklib doesn't like you and has been vowing to get his revenge on you for 'showing him up'? Sergeant Oklib paused, sighed and continued, "I'm disappointed, lads. King Arcon has been good to us and you all know the situation. He wants his staff recovered and one of you is going to get it back. The question is - who is it going to be?" Even now, it's hard for you to believe what happened. Oklib walked round behind you, still giving his speech and you were busy staring at the ground and trying not to get noticed. When Oklib shouted, "Volunteer, one pace forward, now!" you suddenly felt a sharp <> in your arm and, startled, made a swift hop forward. Turning to rub your stinging arm, you noticed a strange absence of feet to either side of you. None in front either. But behind you was the Sergeant, casually repinning a medal, and you were left - totally alone - the 'volunteer'. It wasn't hard to see the old devil had planned the whole thing. He put on a good show, though. Over he came, beaming a smile, slapping you on the shoulder and saying, "Well done, lad. I only wish I could go, but you know the way my paperwork has built up. I just couldn't spare the time." Meanwhile a small figure in black robes was drawing some strange symbols on the ground and muttering to himself. Before you really understood what was happening, Oklib spun you round, got you slightly off-balance and, with a pat on the back, you were propelled onto the symbols and vanished from the sight of your former companions. You found yourself falling, falling through blackness, getting short of breath until you thought you would pass out. Then suddenly you landed by a rickety old signpost in the middle of a strange meadow that you'd never seen before in your life. As you dusted yourself off, you vowed that, somehow or other, you'd find your way back and show Oklib just what you thought of him for doing this to you! A narrow stream runs along the end of the garden, cutting off a small island to the south. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 88 Herb Garden END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 88 What a smart idea! Some clever gardener has turned this small island into a herb garden. A narrow box hedge round the edge has only one gap in it to the north, back towards the main veg garden. Shorter hedges divide the main bed into subdivisions, each containing a different herb - parsley, thyme, rosemary and dill to name just a few. A delightful aroma rises from the beds. In case cook should get tired whilst gathering her herbs, a rustic wooden bench has been thoughtfully provided under the shade of a slender willow tree in the centre. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 89 Library SOUTH 80 UP 90 NORTH 101 END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 89 Any bookworm would be at home here. Each wall of this large room is lined from top to bottom with books shelves, and each shelf is full of expensive-looking volumes. Each book is bound in leather. The scent from the covers is almost overpowering. Ladders are fixed to the tops of the shelves for the more agile readers to reach even the highest shelves and, by experimenting, you notice that the ladders are fixed on runners, allowing them to be slid, silently, from one end of each wall to the other. At the north end is a short passage which appears to open out into a larger room. To the side of the entrance is a faded sign. A spiral staircase leads up in one corner of the room. Not the sort that hang on walls for visitors to gawk at and admire. These weapons seem to have a life of their own. Swords, spears, knives and sundry other dangerous items fly around the room, rebounding off the walls and occasionally hitting each other, when they appear to have a brief 'fight' before zooming off again. More illumination comes from the walls where strange fungal growths give off a dim glow. At one side of the balcony is a small wooden hive.
