Quick Install Westfront PC: The Trials of Guilder (Version 20.00) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Westfront PC is (C)opyright 1993-2004 by Paul Panks. All Rights Reserved. Portions (C) 1999 Perfect Sync, Inc. All Rights Reserved. By Paul Allen Panks (dunric@yahoo.com) !!! Copy this text file into your Westfront PC directory for reference !!! To install Westfront PC, run SETUP.EXE and follow the onscreen instructions. Important!!! ------------ If you played previous versions of this game, make SURE to copy these seven (7) files: wf.mrc wf2.mrc skills.dat custom.wpn locate.wpn hiscore.dat score.dat onto a disk or something and then...after installing again...copy them back. The reason for this is that all five files are specific to your character(s) and are reset to "0" with every update I do (I assume people are playing for the first time, unfortunately). Sorry for any inconvience this may cause (or has caused). I might just change this in future versions. Until then, make sure to do this if you plan on downloading a newer version. Thanks! :) Quirks ------ This game has a few quirks worth explaining: 1) Monsters will occasionally fail to revive. If this happens, then simply quit the current session and reload your saved game. The monster(s) will then (for sure) be back in the same room you saved it in. 2) Some items get ripped from your inventory upon reloading a saved game. This is normal. Some items are special for the proper functioning of quests (i.e. ironkey for Castle Quest #1, medallion for Free King from Statue Quest, etc). This is completely normal and *not* a bug in the game. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. :( 3) If your password fails to work, don't panic. Simply use 'zztop' for the password instead. It will work everytime. 4) Finally, weather events happen no matter where you are in the game (even if you are inside a building). This is an intentional anamoly and not a reflection on my laziness. :) 5) Ok, one last tidbit: Sometimes when entering in a direction (i.e. north) the game won't respond and will send you back to the (>) prompt. Don't worry, this again is normal. The parser isn't perfect and is occasionally fussy about input. Just re-enter the phrase or command and it will work a second time. Game play --------- I get hundreds of e-mails a month asking just about the same questions. This is either because A) No one reads the included documentation file "WFPC.HLP" B) No one bothers to type "help", "hint" or "help me" at the game prompt. Or C) My documentation stinks. So here is a brief summary of commands: Westfront PC is an adventure game like Zork. If you haven't played Zork or other text adventure games (called 'Interactive Fiction' nowadays), then go ahead and look up how to play text adventures in the included "WFPC.HLP" help file. Commands -------- N - Abbrevation for North. Example: n You may not use north or go north. All other commands are the same (South, East, West, Up and Down) I - Abbrevation for Inventory. You may also use inventory. This command lists what you are carrying. Example: i Example: inventory If you want to see what Faldor (the main bodyguard) is carrying, type: examine faldor OR exa faldor (exa is short for examine) EXAMINE ------- Look at a particular object. Syntax: examine Other syntax: Faldor, examine Example: examine tavern Example: examine key Example: examine villager Example: exa key Example: exa villager Example: Faldor, examine tavern Example: Faldor, exa villager Nearly all the room descriptions are examined using the longhand of "examine" and *not* "exa". SCORE ----- Lists your attributes such as hit points and food units. You may also use a question mark ("?") to do the same. Syntax: score Other syntax: ? Example: score Example: ? GET --- Get picks up objects. Essential for gameplay. Syntax: get Other syntax: get from More syntax: Faldor, get More syntax: Faldor, get from Example: get key Example: get key from bag Example: get key from hover Example: Faldor, get key DROP ---- Drops an object. Syntax: drop Other syntax: Faldor, drop Example: drop key Example: Faldor, drop key PUT --- Places an object inside a bag or the hover. Syntax: put in Other syntax: Faldor, put in Example: put key in bag Example: put key in hover Example: Faldor, put key in bag Example: Faldor, put dagger in bag GIVE ---- Gives an object to Faldor and *only* Faldor. Proviso: Faldor must be in the same room. Syntax: give to Faldor Other syntax: Faldor, give to Example: give key to Faldor Example: Faldor, give key to Villager Faldor cannot currently give an object to you. He must drop it and then you must GET the object. See get above. WIELD ----- Readies a weapon for combat. Fighting with bare hands is just plain silly. Proviso: You cannot wield a cursed weapon. Type "inventory" or "i" to see a list of items you are carrying. Syntax: wield Other syntax: Faldor, wield Example: wield broadsword Example: Faldor, wield broadsword UNWIELD ------- Unreadies a weapon. This makes you take the weapon off hand and put back into your general inventory of items. Proviso: You cannot unwield a cursed weapon. Type "inventory" or "i" to see a list of items you are carrying. Syntax: unwield Other syntax: Faldor, unwield Example: unwield broadsword Example: Faldor, unwield broadsword Ok, so that's the basic idea. For a list of commands during gameplay, make sure to type: help at the game prompt. The game prompt is that nifty little ">" sign with the flashing cursor. The cursor is that nifty little "_" symbol that blinks on and off repeatedly. And anything you type is highlighted in green. If you have any questions, consult my website here: http://www.geocities.com/dunric/westfront.html Or you can check out the included "WFPC.HLP" help file in your Westfront PC directory (default is c:\wfpc). Or you can e-mail me: dunric@yahoo.com I usually respond very quickly, so feel free! :) WHAT THE COLORS MEAN -------------------- Many times you will find text within the game that is color coded. This means the following: Color Meaning Usage ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GREY/GRAY In-room command Depends on room YELLOW Something of interest Examine it or use it CYAN (Turquoise) Something of interest or an In-room command Depends on room LIGHT RED Varies (typically bad) Depends on circumstance; If monster: evil! If after a command, then something bad happened. LIGHT GREEN Varies (typically good) Depends on circumstance; If monster: good... If after a command, then something good happened. PURPLE Something to do with THOR Depends; If relating to THOR, then it means you tried to do something THOR didn't like. If not relating to THOR, then it's probably VERY bad! WHITE Typical game response Depends on circumstance and room you are in. DARK BLUE ??? ??? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SHOPS/TAVERNS ------------- The shops and taverns will close at night periodically. Also, you may use the lantern or light skill to dispell the darkness if it says, "It's too dark too move in that direction!" Should you get, "It's too muddy to move in that direction!" try putting on the regular boots (and *not* the forceboots or glistening anklet). Finally, as a general rule, monsters or objects with two or more words in the name: Detective Funkydog Glistening Anklet Shroud of Saint Nephan Holy Mace etc. Require that you use the most common name, i.e.: funkydog anklet shroud mace If words are strung together like so: holywater spellbook ironkey Just type them in as they appear, with no spaces. In versions 13.10 or above, you may purchase the chewing gum at the local taverns to temporarily raise your strength. This is *not* covered in any of the help files, so remember this well! :) The strength effect lasts until the next day, or when you enter battle. Your weapon class is raised by how many chewing gum sticks you purchased before fighting (i.e. if you purchased 5 sticks of chewing gum, your weapon is raised by 5 classes in strength). HELP AVAILABLE -------------- Help available: Type "help" at the game prompt for commands. Type "help me" at the game prompt for the in-game documentation file. Type "hint" at the game prompt for extended hints per room. Make sure to click on the help file "WFPC.HLP" for extra help. Also, if you have personal HISCORE.DAT or SCORE.DAT files when attaining a high score in Westfront PC, just copy those files into a temporary directory before installing the new version (don't forget to copy them back, too!) Sorry for any inconvience. :) The source code is downloable here: http://www.geocities.com/dunric/westfront.html Just click on the link that says "WFPC Source Code (ver#)" Have fun! :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPANISH (ESPANOL): Recepci¢n a la versi¢n X!
