PALM HUGO --------- Requirements ------------ - Palm OS 3.5 or later, with minimum 2 MB of memory--however, 8 MB are recommended. Palm OS versions prior to 3.5 are currently not supported. Getting Started --------------- - Before installing the file "palmhugo.prc" be sure to delete any existing Hugo installation on the device. Failure to do so may cause erratic behavior if the application, preference setting format, etc. has changed since the last installed version. Converting Hugo Games --------------------- - Use hugo2pdb, in handy C or Perl incarnations, to convert Hugo .HEX gamefiles into Palm-usable .PDB databases which can then be uploaded to the device. Entering commands, shortcuts, etc. ---------------------------------- When an input is active, tap the keyboard shortcut area of the graffiti pad, or enter Shortcut+K to bring up the onscreen keyboard. Use the device's up/down buttons to access scrollback. When no input is active, the up/down buttons are read as up/down by the Hugo program, e.g., for navigation of some kinds of menus, etc. Also see "Manage Buttons", "Manage Commands", and "Manage Word List" under Setup Options, below. Setup Options ------------- Manage Buttons: Up to 12 buttons are configurable. Each button consists of a command and a label. The command (e.g., "North") is what appears on the command line when the button (e.g., "N") is tapped during input. Each button label can be one or two letters. To restore the buttons to the default direction buttons, select the Reset button. Manage Commands: Up to twelve buttons can be configured. When a word in the story is tapped, a popup list of commands is displayed. When editing commands, use the '^' character to stand in for the selected word, as in "Ask ^ about". If there is no '^' character, the selected word appears at the end of the command. If the checkbox for a command is checked, the command is immediately entered; if unchecked, more words may be entered. Double-tap a word to copy it alone into the input line. To restore the list of commands to the default compass directions, select the Reset button. Manage Word List: Up to twelve shortcut words are configurable. Tap the '...' button once during input to show a popup list of words to select from. When a word is selected, it is copied to the input line. (Note that if a story provides its own list of context commands, tapping the '...' button once will display it. Select '...' from the bottom of the context command list to display the user list of words.) Options: Omit blank lines - Tries to avoid printing blank lines as much as possible to save on display space (off by default). Use minimal windows - Tries to avoid windows that do not show properly on a reduced-size display (off by default). If a Hugo program is not displaying properly, try changing this setting. Use colors - Use color (on color devices) or inverse printing (on monochrome devices) if the game attempts it. Smart formatting - Automatically generate typographic punctuation (quotation marks, etc.) where appropriate. Known issues ------------ - When switching away from Hugo when no input is active, restoring of the screen when switching back does not work, and the screen will be blank. - When switching back to Hugo, any previously incomplete input will need to be re-entered.
