The following is a transcript of a walk through the interactive fiction title "Intruder". As far as practical, it relies on logical actions as determined from information already revealed in the current session and the reasonable expectations of a player familiar with interactive fiction in general, but not this title in particular. The final score is 100 points out of a possible 100, in 305 turns (291 turns excluding the Prologue). Note that due to randomization in the story, this script does not always work. * * * I N T R U D E R Z-machine compiler PC/Win32 Inform 6.15 Inform Library 6/7 (Serial Number 970918) Copyright (c) Graham Nelson 1993-98 Would you like to restore a saved game position (Y/N)? no Do you want to see the prologue (Y/N)? yes It seems that Sherman is really on the verge of indeed carrying out his threats this time. "Believe me: You are really going to be in major trouble if you're not paying within two weeks' time!" he exclaims, no longer trying to conceal his anger. "Oh, calm down Mr. Sherman", you try to appease. "You see, I've encountered some minor difficulties in business this month and..." "That's what you always say! I will call you in a few days! Better do something to have the money then!" Sherman shouts into the phone and hangs up. Bankers... What do they know? It's just one of these days... Actually, it's Wednesday, July 8th and you spent the whole of this beautiful summer morning sitting in your office, smoking and thinking about how to pay these outstanding debts Sherman, the bank manager, keeps talking about. There wasn't a brain wave among the ideas you had. To be precise, you didn't even have any idea so far. Your Office (You are on the leather chair.) Your office is furnished in an extremely simplistic style: An old desk, an old telephone and fax machine sitting on it, some file cabinets (the cheap ones, made of metal), two chairs (one made of leather behind the desk -- where you are sitting right now, and a wooden chair in front of the desk -- for your customers). That's it. There's a window looking out on a grey backyard in the south wall. The door, out of here, is to the north and is currently closed. >inventory You are carrying nothing, but you are wearing a pair of black shoes, a pair of blue jeans and a black shirt. >examine desk It looks cheap and not too sturdy. Apart from that, it is quite small. >search desk There is nothing on the desk. >open desk The desk was indeed very cheap. Cheap enough not to have drawers. >stand You get off the leather chair. Your Office >examine cabinet They are old, rickety, ugly and, as if that weren't enough already, slowly becoming more and more rusty. They are closed at the moment. >open cabinet Opening the file cabinets reveals some files. >examine files An endless number of files, unsorted, lots of sheets missing... In one word: A mess. There's suddenly a knocking at the office door. Hmm, who might that be? Could it be that a customer's visiting you? >open door The office door is now open. An attractive woman of about thirty-five is waiting in front of your office door. She is dressed in a crimson costume and is wearing a white scarf. "Hello", she says. "I'm Susan Kelly. You're the private investigator, right?" You ask her to come in, she does so and takes a seat on the wooden chair. You close the office door again. >examine woman She is mid thirty, blonde, tall and makes a serious, determined impression at first look. She is wearing a tasteful crimson costume and has a white scarf around her neck. Susan carries a black leather handbag. >sit on leather chair You get onto the leather chair. >listen You hear nothing unexpected. "Okay", the woman says, "I'll briefly explain why I'm here. As I said before, my name is Susan Kelly. You might know my husband if you're into popular music. Well, he's Jonathan Kelly. The producer... the keyboard player... the songwriter. You ever heard of him?" >>yes "Good", she continues, "although that doesn't make much of a difference. What matters is, I'm going to get divorced soon. But, you know, you just can't trust men these days. Understand what I mean?" >>yes "Of course you do", she replies, obviously completely unimpressed. "Anyway, I suspect this bastard... well, my husband, you see... I suspect he's going to keep me from getting what is mine. I suppose he's got one or more secret bank accounts, maybe in Switzerland, maybe somewhere else." She pauses for a moment. >listen You hear nothing unexpected. "What I want you to do", she continues, "is this: We've got a summer house in France, by the sea, very nice. Near a small village called Soulac-sur-mer. He's there at the moment, together with our children, Paul and Christopher. But the kids told me on the phone yesterday that he'll be away until tomorrow. Some business thing somewhere in Germany, I think. Whatever. I want you to get to the summer house, I want you to break into it, and I want you to bring me some evidence that he's hiding money away from me. See what I mean?" >>yes "Fine. You don't seem to be as dumb as I had expected", she says in a low voice. "You're going to do that for me, aren't you? I'll give you 10.000 pounds if you do." >>yes "Very good. I knew you were going to cooperate. Because if you do not accept this job, you're going to be in some really big trouble." She pauses again, looking intensely at you. >listen You hear nothing unexpected. "I'm sure you know who Donald Sherman is, do you?" >>yes "Fine! Actually, he sort of recommended you to me. And do you know what he's going to do if you don't help me with my... let me say... 'little problem'? He'll take the necessary steps to make the bank ask you to pay back your debts immediately. Your solely dependent on their goodwill and you know that, don't you? What do you say? Do you accept this... offering of mine?" >>yes "Brilliant." Susan gets up from her chair and hands you a flight ticket to Paris. "This is a ticket for today. Departure is at 3:45pm. Don't miss the flight, okay? And here's something else." She reaches into her handbag and gets out a cellular phone. "Take this with you. I might call you at some time tonight to hear what progress you're making. Alright?" "Okay", you say. After Susan has described the way to get to the summer house once you are in Paris, she leaves your office. [Press Any Key] Your plane arrives in Paris at 4pm CET. You've been here before, you know the Charles-de-Gaulle airport. After only ten minutes you've rented a car and are on your way to Soulac-sur-mer, that little village at the Atlantic coast, about 60 miles north of Bordeaux. The five hours drive is boring, but it does give you an opportunity to think about how you got here and what you will do when you have arrived at the Kelly summer house. This job is definitely a major one, a big chance for you to make these 10.000 life-saving pounds without having to work that much for it. Okay, it's true: You'll have to be a bit of a burglar to earn the money and, yes, it might be a tad dangerous. But who cares? Being a private eye has always been a tough job. And you've been through worse things. There's no doubt you'll make this. You stop at a McDonald's on the way to get you something to eat before arriving at your destination. By the time you'll be there, the two children will probably be sound asleep and you'll have no trouble getting into the house. Having arrived at the address given, you get out of the car and have a first look at the estate. INTRUDER Interactive Fiction: A Burglary Copyright 1998, 1999 by Volker Lanz. The dog is barking loudly, staring at you with hatred in his green eyes. >put pills in burger You remove the top sandwich and put the pills in the hamburger. >give burger to dog (first taking the hamburger) You throw the hamburger over the fence. It lands on the other side. The dog gratefully accepts this unexpected meal and swallows it in a single bite. Apparently, the sleeping pills do the same to him that they would have done to you: Not enough to kill him, but certainly enough to make him tumble for a few seconds, before he falls both to his side and asleep. >climb fence With great effort, you manage to climb over the iron fence. [You have entered the property for the first time. From now on, the game will be in vicious mode. If you'd like to continue playing in nice mode, indicate NICE at any time.] Front Path You're standing at the front path of the Kelly summer house, between an impressing solid iron fence and the front door, which is closed. A stone path leads around the house from here to the north and to the south. The street is to the east, but the fence is still in the way. A pit bull is lying on the ground, fast asleep. [Your score has just gone up by ten points.] >s South of Front Door There's little to be said about this part of the garden south of the front door. There are no doors or windows leading into the house here at ground level. A stone path leads to the south side of the house in the west and to the front path north of you. >w South of House Here you are at the south side of the house. A path leads to the terrace to the west and to the south of the front door to the east. You can see a few small and one large window. There is no way into the house from here. There are trees here, both left and right of the stone path. You can see some sort of pit in the ground, beneath the windows. >w South of Terrace The stone path you're on bends around the house to the north and east here. The sun terrace is to the north and the south side of the house to the east. Dunes to the west block the view of the ocean. You can see the kennel of that charming dog you already met here. >search kennel There's a rusty key in it, which you take. >n Terrace During daytime, this terrace between house and beach is probably used for sunbathing. At the moment, though, this isn't possible due to lack of sunlight. Three steps lead up to a glass door into the house east of you. The door is currently closed. You can go west to the beach or walk north or south to get around the house. >unlock door with rusty key That doesn't seem to fit the lock. >examine door The terrace door is closed. There are some wires attached to the pane on the inside that could possibly be part of a burglar alarm. >search steps You find a handwritten note. It says: "Kids, if you thought I'd put the key to the studio under the steps again, you were wrong. Why don't you just give up? Dad." Hmm. At least here we've got a father that really knows his kids... Disappointed, you put the note back under the steps. >n By the Swimming-Pool You are standing by the side of the swimming pool that belongs to the estate. It is a basin of about thirty feet in diameter and may be six or seven feet deep. You can go to the terrace to the south, to the beach, which extends to the south-west of here, or to the north side of the house by walking eastward. >e North of House This is the north side of the house. The front door is to the east of here and the swimming pool to the west. Above the ground, just too high for you to be in reach, a few windows can be seen. Between you and the fence marking the property line, directly to the north of you, is a small garden shed (the wooden door to which is closed and locked with a rusty padlock). There is no way into the house from here. There are trees here, both left and right of the stone path. >unlock shed with rusty key You unlock the padlock. >drop rusty key The rusty key is now on the floor. >open shed The wooden door is now open. >n Darkness It's completely dark around you and you can't see a thing. >turn on flashlight With a click, the flashlight begins providing bright light. Garden Shed This is a small garden shed, filled with all the tools the sophisticated gardener of today might need. These are on the floor and on the various shelves affixed to the walls. On the shelves is a toolbox. There's a stack of waste paper on the floor next to the wooden shed door. >read waste paper This is a huge stack of waste paper -- discarded newspapers, magazines, letters and hastily scribbled notes. Among them is the draft of a letter from Kelly to his wife: "J. You jump into the pool... In the Swimming-Pool (on the surface) You're swimming on the surface of the basin that is part of the Kelly property. The water is definitely not warm enough for a night-swim. You're feeling all but comfortable. >d In the Swimming-Pool (under water) You're under the surface of the water in the pool. It's quite dark down here, so you can hardly see the ground beneath you. >search floor You can hardly see it. However, for a moment you thought there was something blinking in one corner of the ground. You'll soon need to get to the surface again for air. >search floor Ah, you've got it! It's a small key, lying in a corner of the pool. You take it. You're on the brink of suffocation. >u Phew! At last! In the Swimming-Pool (on the surface) >exit You climb out of the pool, wet and shivering. By the Swimming-Pool You can see a black shirt, some grey boxer shorts, a pair of blue jeans, a pair of black shoes, a car key, a cell phone, a paper bag (in which is a Salat du Chef) and a flashlight here. >don shorts (first taking the grey boxer shorts) You are now wearing some grey boxer shorts. >don jeans (first taking the pair of blue jeans) You are now wearing a pair of blue jeans. >don shirt (first taking the black shirt) You are now wearing a black shirt and a pair of blue jeans. >don shoes (first taking the pair of black shoes) You are now wearing a pair of black shoes, a black shirt and a pair of blue jeans. >take all car key: You are now carrying the car key. cell phone: You are now carrying the cell phone. paper bag: You are now carrying the paper bag. flashlight: You are now carrying the flashlight. >sw On the Beach You have arrived on a private beach that is part of the Kelly estate here. It's not huge, but it looks like it is certainly quite beautiful during daytime, especially because the sand beneath your feet seems to be incredibly soft and fine. Now, however, the waves that quietly roll onto the shore are only lit by dim moonlight. You can go to the terrace to the east or to the swimming pool to the north-east. A small yet very beautiful shell is lying in the sand. >take shell You are now carrying the small shell. >e Terrace >unlock door with small key You unlock the terrace door. >s South of Terrace You can see the kennel of that charming dog you already met here. >e South of House There are trees here, both left and right of the stone path. You can see some sort of pit in the ground, beneath the windows. >call 56098909 on phone You dial the number on the cell phone. A light comes on behind the large window. A few seconds later, your call is answered by a high-pitched, sleepy voice shyly saying "Hello? Who's there?" You simply say "Sorry, wrong number." and hang up. >throw shell at large window You throw the small shell at the window. There's a faint click as it touches the pane, before falling to the ground and disappearing from sight into a narrow air-conditioning pit. >hide behind trees You take cover behind the trees. It seems that no one saw you. Behind the Trees You have hidden behind some trees, south of the house. The large window is being opened from the inside and two little heads appear in it. >turn off phone You switch the cell phone off. The heads in the window have eyes which scan the garden. Fortunately, they cannot see you. After a few seconds the heads are withdrawn from the window and disappear in the room behind it again. The window is closed again, but you can't hear it click into place. Eventually, the light in the room is extinguished. >n South of House There are trees here, both left and right of the stone path. Darkness [Your score has just gone up by fifteen points.] >turn on flashlight With a click, the flashlight begins providing bright light. Living Room You have entered the living room. In its centre, a large coffee table with eight chairs around shows that guests are welcome here (this, however, may not necessarily apply to you). A leather sofa with a small side table also adds to the impression of a comfortable place. Above the sofa and a wooden cabinet, a collection of silver, golden and platinum records covers the wall, displaying the success of the house owner in quite an impressive manner. The most prominent feature of this room, however, resides beneath a large window in the south wall that looks onto the dark garden: An original Steinway grand piano. An open doorway to the north leads to the corridor. The large window in the south wall has been opened. On the leather sofa is a cat. >move cabinet You move the wooden cabinet from the wall and find out it's open at the back. >search cabinet In the wooden cabinet is a portable DAT player. >take player You are now carrying the portable DAT player. >n Centre Hallway You are the middle of the hallway running from east to west. Open doorways lead to the dining room to the north and the living room to the south of you. >n Dining Room This room is rather small, has a table seating six in the centre, and a window in the north wall lets in the faint moonlight. Some paintings on the east wall, apparently by local artists and all originals, give the room more of a cheerful atmosphere. Open doorways to the west and south lead out of here. >w Kitchen The kitchen of the house has been furnished with an eye more for utility than beauty. It has all the usual tools and appliances: Refrigerator, microwave oven, shelves, cabinets with china, some drawers and more. There are two open doorways here: The one in the south wall leads to the corridor and the other, in the east, to the dining room. Next to the latter, a kitchen clock is affixed to the wall. There's a hastily scribbled note pinned to the refrigerator. You can also see a cat bowl here. >open refrigerator Opening the refrigerator reveals a can. >open drawer Opening the drawers reveals a can opener and a pair of scissors. >take scissors, opener, can pair of scissors: You are now carrying the pair of scissors. can opener: You are now carrying the can opener. can: You are now carrying the can. >open can with opener Okay, the can is now open. >put food in bowl Okay, the cat food is now in the cat bowl. >s Hallway At the west end of the ground floor hallway, a door leads out to the terrace. On its title page, showing Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks together with producer Nick Davis, a line in thick letters says: "Jonathan Kelly Reveals Mastering Secrets in Interview. P.21" >read page 21 This interview was obviously done in Kelly's studio in London. There are lots of pictures showing him sitting behind a mixing desk or working with all brands of synthesizers. The interview was done shortly after the huge success of Kelly's single "Until the End", the mixing and mastering of which he describes in great detail. A remark he makes at one point catches your eye: "And, well, you know, the song is also quite meaningful in a personal way to me... One could even say, the safety of my valuables depends solely on this song (laughs). No, just forget it, you can't understand that. And I'm not explaining it." >n Basement Corridor >n Office You have entered a room which serves as combined office and library of the Kelly summer house. Here, Jonathan Kelly works when it comes to the tougher parts of the music business. Countless bookshelves occupy the walls and a large desk with a telephone, a fax machine and a computer sitting on it is situated in the middle of the room. In front of the desk, a chair is waiting for someone to sit down and work. On the north wall a small cabinet made of metal can be seen. A door to the south, now open, leads back to the corridor. Being crammed with all the electronic gear the keyboard player and producer of modern times obviously needs (including a mixing desk, an endless number of patch bays, a huge monitoring system, both digital and analog tape recorders, various sorts of synchronizers and more), it completely confuses you. A door to escape this confusion is to the north. Unfortunately, it is closed. Like some sort of weird anachronism, a sofa is sitting in one corner of the room. Hanging on a wall is a platinum record. After your return to London, you immediately call Susan. She orders you to come to her place and give her what you found at her husband's house. Having received the hard drive, she is quite pleased. "Okay, will you now please give me the money?" you ask her impatiently. Her expression quickly changes and she looks at you as though you were the biggest jerk she ever saw in her life. "You're not honestly thinking I'll ever pay you one lousy single penny, are you?" she says, laughing at your face. "God, how naive men can be!" "But we made a deal! You promised to..." "Idiot! Just get out of here!" Susan exclaims, looking at you with utter contempt. "That's just what I expected, Susan", you say and remove the file from your bag. "But you'll change your mind as soon as you've had a look at this." "What do you mean? What's in that file?" Susan remains cool, but she's obviously less convinced of herself now. "Oh well, you may go through the file when I'm gone. Just don't let anyone else have a look at the contents. Call me when you saw the documents, okay?" you say, before turning to leave. "Oh and, by the way, I've of course made a copy of all the documents in that file." You leave her. A few days later, you find an envelope in the mail.
