The wizard came to you this morning, as you were finishing your kitchen chores, and told you your Initiation had been approved. He told you to finish with the buckets and get a fresh journeyman's tunic, and that you were to meet him at no sooner than midday at the common library. You'd been wanting this news more than expecting it, and you rushed about getting ready, but not thinking. You arrived at 11:59 sharp and you've spent the last uncomfortable minute watching the Magii doing wierd calisthenics in a burning pentangle, combating a rather unpleasant spirit, and wrestling a glowing book from its talons. Rising from his inwardness to find you there, ogling and inadvisedly early, he knots his eyebrows and studies you head to foot. "And to think," he says... "They think you're ready." He draws heavy drapes and invites you into a chamber you've never seen before, despite your poking around. He opens an ornate case and hands you a pair of shoes. As you take them, you are struck by their weight. But when you put them on you find yourself amazingly nimble. "Ugly things," the mage says of the shoes. "But handy on some stretches of road." You ask him where you will be going. "You will be going to Dardhad," the Mage tells you. He begins to hand items from the case. As you take and pocket them, you ask what they are for, but he shakes his head. "Just deliver them intact to the House of the Lunar Transit... Get them all there, especially the compass. But I haven't time or interest to tell you what they are. Take them, and by all means study them, play with them, see if you can get them to work for you." You finish pocketing the things, and he leads you toward what appears a shallow alcove, he steps into it, and gestures for you to follow. As you approach you realize he is walking into stone, interpenetrating it, and he expects you to follow... of course you know you cannot. He sees you hesitate. "Well, you'll have to get there the hard way... I'll see you at the Transit House." You ask what sort of tasks you are being set. He studies you for a long moment, then replies. "If you arrive at the Transit House with all these treasures we are entrusting to you, arrive reasonably quickly and not having created any heinous offenses to society I suppose we will be happy enough to grant you First Apprenticeship. It'll also look good on your record if you learn some magic, even if it's some dumb hidey-hands trick. If you see anyone doing any keep a close eye on them--try to figure it out without asking... Here, if you want a challenge: see if you can dream something into existence, or do some healing. Those'll get you some points. I know that the Old Guys in the High Chamber would be both grateful and sincerely impressed if you could liberate Habib's Book of passageways from the vault under the tower of the moon. Or bolder even, find and destroy the mirror of souls, liberate Dardhek from the Angry King. You'd have to find a way into the castle, get out alive. Balls needed. You would be made grand wizard of this whole kingdom if you did, but I can't imagine how you'd go about any of that. You'll be on your own if you wade out that far. Just get back alive with these things and that'll be enough for the Low Council's consideration. But don't even think of gaining admittance at the Transit door without the compass." You begin to ask what is so special about the compass, when the Magii completes his penetration into the stone. You spin around, aware suddenly that you are no longer in a corner of the library study... but rather in a chamber of crude gray blocks. A chamber with no apparrent exit or egress. You feel a momentary surge of panic. A part of you wishes to learn a little more about the tests you wil be facing. The stone walls around you tell you the test has already begun.
