VERSION MAGX ! CREATIVE COOKING ! an interactive cooking.. surprise !! on Railei ! #COMMENT Entry for IFComp 2023 ! Actually is a postquel of my main WIP (the one which will NEVER be entered into the IFComp or other comps..), circa 20-25 years after; but the timeframe will not to be referenced directly. Our trio WILL have a cameo appearance... The main quest is finding ingredients, with an underlying "treasure hunt" of knowledge & lore about Railei (albeit some thing will remain under wraps) This source code has also the role of providing the first worked MagX source code, a thing Magx sorely needs. On this, a word on commenting: aside from #COMMENT-#END_COMMENT blocks, magx uses four comment-to-EOL characters: ! * > ; plus the pair (* *) and there's even an UNDOCUMENTED EOL comment character, / The usage I have done for these chars here is: ! are section/group/aerea delimiters * are comments about magx coding. ; as everyone coding in .asm knows, is the inline comment. > of course are comments about narrative, e.g expected player's input ßtesting will invariably lead to comments about UNexpected player's input ;) / the undocumented end-of-line comment char, is kept in reserve. (* *) being legacy comment delemitators are unused, kept as strategic reserve if the need of another comment category surfaces. NB that because comment can't be inside description block, the comment is always above or below the block. !! So I encourage reading the HELP in every location, but preferably after completing the story, comments being very spoily. This work is done with Magx, using only the stock AGT verbs (INSTRUCTIONS gives a list of these standard verbs), and is released with its source code, which AFAIK is the only complete Magx source released. I think that albeit unfinished and now obsolete, Magx can still be used for tiny/small works, if one uses astutely its features & peculiarities. The only added verbs are ABOUT (but if you are reading here, you obviously already know this :D ) and CREDITS. On the admittedly limited interaction with NPC,TALKing to NPC is the best approach, when ASKing NPC gives a topic list, to be asked with the standard ASK [npc] ABOUT [topic] The story is definitively a merciful one on the Zarfian scale. END_MESSAGE donewithturn END_COMMAND COMMAND credits printmessage My credits and thanks are: First and foremost, to the late David Malmberg, not only for AGT, the language from which Magx, the language used in this work, is derived, but also for being the forerunner of the IFComp with his annual AGT contest. This work, the first in an AGT-derived IF language published since his passing, is respectfully dedicated to his memory. AGT in turn is derived from GAGS, an IF language written by Mark Welch, to which due credits are hence given. Then to the IFComp organizers, your effort is, and will be, always appreciated, year by year, by the IF community. Of course, my thanks to the IF community, as a whole, for the nice, friendly and cozy place in the 'Net since the days of r.a.i-f and r.g.i-f Lastly, but definitively not least, to the two volunteer betatesters and proofreaders (the latter role even more important than the former, because I'm Italian, and english isn't my mothertongue) in strict alpha order: Thank you, "The Pixie", "MaxFog", and Andrew Schultz for your proofreading and betatesting effort! Just kidding... either you have read the ABOUT (you have read it, isn't ?) or you want to read the "director's comment" below. The first location is the right place for general comment on the story; I want to point that the (hopefully still) incomplete Magx descends from AGT, a very early IF language, and albeit vastly improved, Magx still shows some of the wrinkles inherited from AGT. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [bedroom] Sadly there's nothing to do... ...Sadly because actually I planned to add a changing into dinner dress sub quest after the conclusion of the main quest, but in the end, I decided against it: From one side, it's "creative cooking", not "creative dinner", so the story must properly end with the cooking, and on the other side can be perceived as a gratuitous stretching and padding of the story. (if and when you read the end-game messages, you surely notice a vestige of this original planning in their structure...) with post-comp hindsight, I should have given stock things to do, namely, EXAMining things, whose ended being the main criticism during the IFComp. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [yard] I admit that this location has no role, now and then, save a bit of colour (hopefully not purple...) END_HELP_DESCR HELP [shit_pit] OK I recognise that this location is a rather lousy one... Please don't judge it negatively, in this place I have attempted to convey a major feature of my WIP, that is, the intimistic viewpoint, and what place is more intimate than a toilet ? what wonders me post-comp, is that no one seems to notice the apparent "score bug" caused by the last but not lousy point gathered entering here, leading to a final 101/100 score, the 101 point was intentional, following the theme of an old-style but merciful to the extreme IF, so perhaps is more exact a "bonus" than "last lousy" point... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [study] This story goes onward west, but east is an interesting little exploration, with some background of my WIP... Yes, this is the classical "junction" location, but for once, isn't the usual corridor.. and again, the lack of decorations of Magx and AGT is sorely felt here, I wish that I can easily implement & describe in more detail the dinner setup... perhaps in a possible 2.0 release, but please don't hold your breath about this... On printed matters, everyone in the IF community know that I prefer to differentiate between EXAMINing and READing printed matters, so please both EXAMINE and READ those books. yes, these books delivers a sneak peek in the story to come, sometimes around 2025... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [kitchen] Things really start nearby and will finally end here.. and don't forget to read, more than once, all what is readable here! This is the proper place to elaborate further on "creative cooking": I actually planned to implement the creative cooking (a slighty impegnative coding endeavour, for keeping with the merciful classification), but in the end, I think that I'm realist, and with a dedicated debate on actual, real life, recipes in our small community's forum, however I implement the creative cooking, the resulting discussion on implementation of cooking will have booted the golden banana toward this boot (that is, Italy, the shape of the Italian peninsula is unmistakeable..) END_HELP_DESCR HELP [pantry] Simply do as suggested, back to the kitchen and read... but please don't deny yourself the quick diversion below. Yes, I admit that until entering here, all intentionally look easy, take ingredients, cook and enjoy the dinner with friends, but what is an IF story without adventuring ? ;) Initially I have mulled around the idea of a "taking stock" of what is available in the pantry and the cellar below, but seemed to me a gratuitous main quest step, but in the post-comp I have delivered a description of the sacks, crates &c. content, putting the ingredients for the creative dishes in those descriptions. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [cellar] Not much to suggest about here save about the milk: no, you can't drink it ! on the little secret on milk, I prefer to keep it under wraps until I release the major WIP, where is an interesting surprise... Suffice to say that is the product of some philosophical speculation of mine, and I don't hide that I'm mulling about discussing, during a lull between competitions, the concept of "speculative fantasy" in our little IF community... so, dear IF community fellow, now you're now forewarned ! ;) END_HELP_DESCR HELP [closet] I admit that this space, and the changing room currently are rather unused in this story, but I decided to kept both, as useful elbow space for the customary post-comp release... Initially, I planned to use Woriyo's garments for delivering a glimpse into Railei (garment is a mirror of culture and society..), but in the end, being a bookworm, I decided to leave to printed matter the honor of delivering said glimpse... but if there's a 2.0 version, I'll think about this, but absolutely no promises. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [vanity] Sadly, nothing much to do here... again. Initially, I planned to having Woriyo changing from house clothing to outside clothes, but in the end, albeit changing clothings IS a perfect intimate moment for intimistic narration, I feel that is on one side that can be perceived as unneeded padding, on the other side, I prefer avoidig, at least in the IF competition context, the pitfalls intrinsic to the changing, namely, the momentary, well, nakedness... Now there's something to do, with a little backstory... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [attic] The demijohn is for decoration, but old timers will notice the justapoxition with another demijohn in another attic... ;) Yes, IS an homage and reference to Graham Nelson's Curses, for its 30th birthday. I must 'fess up, back then I failed that low cunning about a certain aunt's gloves, ending in hours of wrapping my head about how to open that other demijohn... Now, there's also an homage to Jigsaw, but please look into the inglenook and the container there, a thing I noted people failed to discover, at least from the feedback & reviews I got during the Comp. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [inglenook] Why not looking inside the failed experiments chest ? Well, surprise ! perhaps someone will find that a bit too intimistic, but in the end, this is IFComp, without A ;) so I correctly refrained in delivering too intimistic content :) Hope that the description of the failed experiment has given at least some good smiles :) END_HELP_DESCR HELP [lplaza] not much to say, the story proceeds eastward, with a tiny diversion westward. Here I should give some information about Luroz: It's the classical "quiet, quaint rural town", where life runs really slow (and people have REALLY long lives...), whose is the centre of the farmland around, the ideal place for the nest of a trio of soulmates, in a valley downhill west of Luroz, whose are well-integrated in the local community. Not that Luroz and its environment is without its share of local Magi, and our PC, Woriyo, a young, and albeit a bit eccentric, creator, is one of these local Magi. Of course, Luroz and Woriyo will appear in the WIP, somewhere in the next pair or so of years... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [wgate] after the cameo, there's nothing to do here... This location is merely the frame around the brief cameo of the protagonists of my WIP, personally I hope that isn't judged as "shameless plug-in"... let's give a little background on this trio: they live in their nest (a large mansion) since a year or so after their Soulmating 60 years ago, researching Magic and giving to the community their magical support (think rural doctor, laywer, engineer); a quiet lifestyle, ideal for researchers in mutual love with really long (more than a millennia..) lifespan, with a good engagement in social activities within local community, as the cameo shows. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [bridge] Talking to uncle Uzki is perhaps productive... The major issue in Magx, stemming from AGT, is the near-nonexistant handling of friendly NPCs, whose can be attacked (they dodge, then happily forgetting about the act of violence, as never happened, go figure...) and can even be *taken*, (a petite kirune carrying a big suvar ?? pleaseee....) I have replaced this pair of nonsense with funny answers, but I'm unsure if there are other, potentially gamebreaking, issues in this nonexistant NPC handling, so please report ASAP if something goes horribly wrong with the NPCs. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [tunnel] Ynola is a long time friend, and between friends, one hand help the other.. ... and yes, she and her sister(s) are a classical Japanese fantasy trope, cat women. if one think enough, feline people engaged in farming business makes more sense than seems. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [uplaza] It's indeed a major hub, all direction lead not to the City on Seven Hills where your author is born and borne [1], but to your objectives, directly and indirectly. [1] reference to the pun in the bash(1) acronym intentional ;) Now the plaza is a bit more fleshed, giving more colour, literally. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [garden] As the list says, indeed this IS the easiest ingredient to find. Originally one of the benches would have hosted the protagonist trio of my WIP, but not a few issues stemming from Magx/AGT's non-existant friendly NPC handling prevented even an imperfect implementation, three days of fighting vainly followed by two days of recovering from the disappointment, and the benches are now sadly empty. and now our little kirune can sit on it, as feedback pointed to me. Thanks, V. and everyone ! END_HELP_DESCR HELP [byinn] Gluttonous Zarigas need a stern talking-to... Originally the public town inn & hall was where a different quest for the fruits started and ended, but in the end I preferred the zarigas sister quest. For whose who have read the source, I apologise again for the bad pun in the name of the message about not entering the inn... but was irresistible. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [market] Sadly again, there's nothing to do here, but I have added more description and things can be examined. I admit that this is now a gratuitous connector location; originally it was where another NPC will be, but in the end he goes early to his harvest eve dinner, because was substantially a double duplicate, of Uzki and Ynola. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [egate] Aside the little history lesson, there's nothing to do here. Yes, the main role of this place is delivering a little history lesson, about warring, a thing that on Railei is a thing of past, millennia in the past, to be precise. Sadly, in the description of the gate I have reckoned the ugly things in the RL whose has happened in the last pair of months... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [road] Going north, back, then east is definitively what little Woriyo needs to do... As economy goes, Luroz is clearly autosufficient, but with a solid and valid connection with the greater communication network via this road, allowing the classical "importing what is needed and exporting the surplus in exchange" style of commercial relationship. END_HELP_DESCR HELP [clearing] Please take what you need.. and don't forget the seasoning ! ;) Originally the yardvine, being a vine, was above, requiring a little effort from our petite Kirune, but in the end, I was unsatisfied with the mini-puzzle and simply put the vine into easy reach. After all, the yardvine still needed its seasoning... END_HELP_DESCR HELP [bend] DIPping the yardvine will be enough, having finally dealt once and for all with the crufty throw thing. On the jornish, I wonder if people can figure what is.... ;) END_HELP_DESCR !! end help messages * sorry for this lame excuse of spoiler space, abusing the 3300+ * lines of source above, turning all of these into the longest spoiler space * ever in IF history... !! GUESTS: Miaonis (1st dish appreciater) !! the twins Kantor and Yantor (2nd dish appreciaters) !! Oyira (3rd dish appreciater) !! Nayiz (surprise dish appreciater) MESSAGE [1stline] With all the new ingredients and those already in the pantry and cellar I start to creatively cook the replacement dishes: First the "nosauce-sasauce", with a stroke of ingenuity: I rolled isel leaves around the sausages, then I peeled out the leaves, and I triturate the nemee and yusiel on the flattened and aromatised leaves, and rolled the leaves around the resulting paste, ending with an excellent ersatz meat sauce. During the dinner Miaonis indeed gulped not one, but two and half portions, purring happily, and even licked clean her plate... and her laughing when we pointed to the creative no-sauce, "so, this is why Ynola winked when she says "good dinner !" to me ! I can have another portion ? pleaseee ?" oh... to be more precise, she gulped three and half portions... END_MESSAGE MESSAGE [2ndline] ; honestly, I'm not satisfied of this para Then I prepared the kolokin, using not only the garnished yardvine but also fillets from the salkod in preparing the stock, resulting in a perfect balance between meat, fish and jornish. Kantor and Yantor really enjoyed the smell and taste of this creative kolokin, thanks mainly to the jornish aroma, one the twins really love. umm, I should create also a name for this ? END_MESSAGE MESSAGE [3rdline] albeit the zarnest leaves was easiest to procure, cooking the stew and preparing the tea was somewhat hard, as expected: traditional dishes by definition leaves little elbow space for creativity, but the intuition in adding a little yardvine in the stew was the right one. Oyira was delighted in seeing and savoring a traditional dish, appreciating the slight yardvine aroma, to the point of starting together, between sips of zarnest tea, an interesting chat about how tradition actually slowly evolved. Definitively the best Harvesting eve dinner I have in my 80 years of life... END_MESSAGE MESSAGE [herrline] ... also thanks to the sudden stroke of creativity, whose turned a red herring into a delicious dish ! Waiting the cooking of the stew, the proverbial lightbulb shines very bright: "I have these salkod fillets, still some isel leaves, my milk, a pair of nemees... If I condense the stock, with the isel leaves, into a broth, then roll the aromatised leaves around the red herring, cook it, peel out the wrapping, pour the broth over it... and a little sprinking of triturated zarnest leaves ? not a bad idea..." Having still time to put the idea in practice, I cooked the most creative dish in Luroz's story, and in tasting it, I realised that I have actually created the very first tasty red herring dish ever!! END_MESSAGE MESSAGE [herrline2] Needless to say, the doubt in the face of my guests was understandable, after all, was a red herring, but after the first, very cautious tasting, everyone was enthutiastic, and the red herring disappears in our six bellies in a resounding success. The most enthutiastic was, of course, Nayiz, whose stayed with me first for discussing the recipe, creativity, dishes, then sleeping together with me. Not only sleeping, that is ;) END_MESSAGE > last but not least, the Venerable XYZZY * showing how to do a box quotation in Magx COMMAND XYZZY quote The bygone days of booming voices, blinking lights, twisty passages, clanking ASR-33s, when XYZZY rules.
