The One That Got Away Copyright (C) 1995, 2000 by Leon Lin Version 1.2 Overview -------------------- Lake Highwater is the place where fishing legends are born. You've come to this serene angling ground to try your skill against "The Old One", an ancient fish who's defied all comers for generations. Will you be the one to finally reel "The Old One" in? "The One That Got Away", written way back in 1995, was my first work of interactive fiction. This game placed third in the TADS division of the First Annual Interactive Fiction competition. Activision included this game in its Masterpieces of Infocom CD-ROM collection, released in 1996. This game is pretty short, as befits a competition entry/first try. It does contain plenty of extra things you can do "for your amusement", so feel free to experiment! Contents -------- Your unzipped game package should contain the following files: TheOne.gam The binary game file readme.txt This readme file An interpreter which can run TADS 2.4.0 game binaries is required to play the game. You are likely to find one for most platforms at ftp.gmd.de. For Mac users (such as myself), I highly recommend Andrew Plotkin's MaxTADS interpreter. Version History --------------- 1.0 The version submitted to the competition. 1.1 Essentially the same as 1.0, except that a minor bug involving a food item that did not disappear after it was eaten was fixed. Also, a secret code word that was used in the first, anonymously submitted game to display my real name is no longer implemented. 1.2 This version has new contact information, as I've been out of Berkeley for several years and no longer can receive mail through my old account. This game has also been recompiled with TADS 2.4.0, although it should play the same as before. I also tidied up the readme file a litte. Legal ----- "The One that Got Away" is freeware, though not public domain. You may distribute it freely as long as you do not make a profit off this game. (You may charge the cost of the media it is distributed on but no more.) This game may not be modified. This readme must accompany the game package. Latest Version and Contact Info ------------------------------- As mentioned above, you should always be able to get the latest copy of this game from ftp.gmd.de in the if-archive. I will also have a copy of the game, as well as a solution, available at my interactive fiction web page at: http://www.netcom.com/~leonlin/if/if.html If you have any questions, comments, or bug reports, feel free to write me at: leonlin@ix.netcom.com Both my e-mail and web page address should be valid for the forseeable future. Acknowledgments --------------- I'd like to thank... ...Volker Blasius, the maintainer of ftp.gmd.de, for his help, especially with solving problems uploading the first version of the game... ...Kevin Wilson, former editor of SPAG and rec.arts.int-fiction regular, for his support, advice, and friendship... ...everyone at rec.arts.int-fiction for their comments and criticism about my game, which will aid me greatly in future endeavors... ...Activision, for publishing this game on their Masterpieces of Infocom CD.
