LEADLIGHT (v1.5, MARCH 2015) README Interactive Fiction - Survival Horror for the Apple II by Wade Clarke http://leadlightgamma.heiresssoftware.com http://wadeclarke.com ------------------------ Leadlight is written in Applesoft BASIC and 8-bit assembly language. It requires at least a 128k RAM Apple IIe enhanced computer or emulator to run. ------------------------ ARCHIVE CONTENTS The folder 'leadlight_1_5' contains all disk images, docs and a pair of Mac and PC emulation kits for the current version of the game. (The PC emulation kit might work in Linux somehow, but I don't know.) The folder 'previous_versions' contains zipped archives of all previous releases of Leadlight. ------------------------ DOCUMENTATION Take a look at the Leadlight Player Guide before you play and keep it handy when you start the game. Apple II Leadlight is like an Infocom game in that a lot of vital information that will keep your PC alive or just make everything better is only contained in the manual. If you get stuck in the game, use the hint sheet. It's included in both PDF form and as plaintext. Both versions have the same content. ------------------------ HOW TO RUN THE GAME [1] If you have a Mac or PC, you can use one of the included preconfigured Apple IIGS emulation kits to start playing without any setup: On a Mac, unzip the archive 'ActiveGS_Mac.zip' to your desktop. On a PC, unzip the archive 'ActiveGS_PC.zip' to your desktop. Then, on either platform, open the resulting folder and doubleclick the ActiveGS application. The game will start. [2] If you are familiar with Apple II emulators, or would like to set one up on your own, or will be using a real Apple II, just take the appropriate disk images and load them into your emulator or computer. MINIMUM SPECS: Leadlight uses ProDOS 8 2.0.3 and so requires an Apple II model with a 65C02 CPU as a minimum. In general, this means you’ll need an enhanced Apple IIe, an Apple IIc or an Apple IIGS emulator or computer. The game will not boot on a straight Apple II or II+. The game comes in two configurations: (a) As two 5.25-inch floppy disks (THIS VERSION REQUIRES TWO 5.25-INCH DISK DRIVES). These disk image files are: leadlight_boot.dsk leadlight_game.dsk If you use this configuration, place the boot disk in drive 1, the game disk in drive 2, then boot the computer. Both disks must be kept in the drives at all times while playing. (b) As a single 3.5-inch floppy disk. This disk image file is: leadlight1_5.2mg If you use this configuration, just place the disk in drive 1 and boot the computer. * The game can also be installed to a hard drive. Read the Player Guide for instructions. The game code is the same in both floppy disk configurations. Your choice of which image(s) to use is really down to what disk drives your Apple II emulator or computer has available to it. You will find that practically all Apple II emulators come with a pair of virtual 5.25-inch drives. Only an Apple IIGS emulator is likely to come preconfigured with a 3.5-inch drive. When run on an Apple IIGS, the game supports the additional features of screen and border colour changes. ------------------------ POSTSCRIPT In 2015 I released a new version of Leadlight for the Glulx virtual machine, called Leadlight Gamma.
