PROVENANCE v1.12.16 by Corey W Arnett (C) MMV Welcome to PROVENANCE! I thank you for taking the time to give the game a try. A couple things before you get started. This game is intended for beginners. The puzzles are not difficult, but they do tend to become more so as the game goes on. I believe that even experienced adventurers will find a challenge as well though. There are no hints in the game as I believe that hints are not necessary and having them there only discourages experimentation while encouraging laziness. If you really have a problem you can email me but I would suggest you look for advice elsewhere first. Some players may finish the game in one sitting, but I believe most will require at least a couple of sessions. Taking a break when stuck and coming back to a problem later often yields miraculous results. I have disabled the map feature in this game because I think that drawing your own map is part of the fun of playing text adventures. If you wanted pretty pictures on your screen you probably would have bought a graphical game instead. Also, there is a rather large maze in the game. I happen to like them, but for those who don't, be assured that the maze does not need to be navigated to complete the game. There is another way to get where you need to go. I also suggest that you read the included manual whether you are an experienced gamer or not. It is not a long read and just may provide you with a clue or two. You will receive points for a variety of actions. This is meant to give you an idea of how you are doing. It is possible to win the game without scoring all the possible points. The score is just meant as a general guide. The goal of the game is not to score the maximum number of points, it is to collect the specified items and take them where you are instructed to. And one more thing: while I consider this game to be for beginners, please be aware that the subject matter is rather dark in places and therefore may be considered adult in nature by some. That said, I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you have any comments or criticisms please email them to me at coreyarnett@hotmail.com. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Of course this is just personal opinion, but here is how I recommend you set up the ADRIFT Runner: On the main toolbar, click Option --> Display & Media In the Appearance tab: Set the typed colour to yellow (255, 255, 0) Set the replies colour to off white (239, 239, 239) Set the background colour to black (0 ,0, 0) Make sure all the boxes are checked: Always use my font (set to Tahoma, 12) References in brackets Prompt for typed commands Room names in descriptions Auto pause long text In the Media tab: Check the enable sound in games and enable graphics in games * make sure to specify graphics location as inline with text. There is no sound in the game and no graphics with the exception of the start. In the Layout tab: Select the choice with no MAP or GFX windows. The map has been disbaled in this game so the more room you have for text the better. *** Install the supplied True Type Fonts (Tahoma and Harrington) to your c:\windows\fonts directory for the best experience. *** The game was written using 1280x1024 screen resolution and looks best under this configuration. Ultimately it is up to you how you set up the game in the ADRIFT Runner. These are only suggestions and may not be practical depending on your specific computer and hardware. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ provenance.zip* file contains: provenance.taf, ADRIFT40r.zip, provenance.pdf, readme.txt, harrington.ttf, tahoma.ttf, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.exe *The lite version (available on the ADRIFT adventure download page) does not include the ADRIFT Runner setup files or the Adobe Acrobat Reader. These must be downloaded separately. Game Statistics: ROOMS = 200 OBJECTS = 336 TASKS = 546 EVENTS = 35 CHARACTERS = 2 MOVES TO FINISH GAME = 858 There are many ways to finish the game as it is not linear in nature. This total is based on the least number of moves required to finish game without a satisfacory understanding of the plot. To play the entire game revealing all information related to plot would require approximately 1500 moves.
