INTRODUCTION You come awake suddenly, with the frightening certainty that there is someone else in your apartment. So great is the fear that you hesitate to open your eyes, and it seems you hear your unwelcome visitor, sensing your electric unease, retreating through your front door. You sit up in bed, listening as the quick footfalls fade down the hall... you hear what could only be the slamming of the stairwell door. Charged with adrenalin, you stand up and take measure of yourself. You seem to have slept in your clothes. You try to remember why that would be, but you can't. You glance at your watch: 6:45. You take a step and find that it is only your mind that is awake. Your body drags leadenly. You feel terriblyhungry and your tongue is dry. As you step away from your bed you experience a dislocated feeling, as if you are not sure of the layout of your apartment. Of course, you remind yourself, you only recently moved here. But still, the layout seems odd, and some of the furnishings unfamiliar. The old brown dresser against the wall seems like the best of friends. But two sleek metal-plated platforms along the south wall, and the squat, efficient console between them seemed somehow minted on the spur of the moment. You look at them, and a voice in your mind, perhaps not a familiar voice, says, "That's a holophone!" Yes, of course, holophone. Everyday household item. It's June 22 2098, and you're Nicholas MacGear, and you are about to graduate from the Chronos Academy. Eight sharp this very morning! As these simple and immediate facts of your existence assemble themselves in your mind like tired soldiers on a wintery field, you continue to stand, studying, or perhaps just staring at the details of your room. Just to get your blood flowing you walk once around the place, beginning with the little room to the northeast. You don't recognize what you see there. There is a tiny cushioned booth, and a single button on the wall. You check out the little room in the northwest corner of your apartment. There's the old standup closet you found on the street just last week. It is ajar. You reach uneasily for the antique glass doorknob and shut the closet. You glance at the damaged wall, the crookedly hanging painting, then return to the central room of your apartment. This leaves only the little room to your west. You stand in that doorway and look within. What you see there baffles you. A single complex appliance dominates the room. Again, that dislocated voice within informs you: it's your Hygenomat. Of course, you say. That's where you shower. It'll all come back to you. Meanwhile, you know what to do: Shower, eat, get yourself looking presentable, check your list of things to do. Get them done, and get to the graduation ceremony before 8:00. You glance at your watch... you have an hour and fifteen minutes... if you complete the little chores, you'll be able to make the 7:30 or the 7:45 northbound skybus, no problem. Why is it, though, that things seem a little strange and unfamiliar? From here you can go north and south, depending on which mode of transportation you will require. To get over to the municipal complex you would have to cross the narrow covered walkbridge southeast. Southwest, you can see a quiet looking sidestreet, though to get to it, you will have to squeeze by the newly erected subway kisok. There is an alley, as well, to the northwest, dead end, as far as you know. All along the eastern side of the sidewalk is a rail, overlooking the whizzing traffic of the magnegrid. Your building shares the block with an abandoned warehouse. Both humans and light servoids use this network to get around town. From here it looks like you may go only go down or back north. In any event, that's how the flow of people seems to go. NORTH 26 WEST 10 ;front of apt END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 13 You have managed to hop the public safety rail, and you drop down onto the robo-gridway. You feel the thrumming of energies beneath your feet, and all around you, automated traffic veers and swerves to avoid hitting you. You have second thoughts about this course of action, but it's too late to reconsider... you'll never get back up to the sidewalk from here, and you're kept busy jumping and dodging the whizzing robot vehicles. But your reflexes aren't up to the job. The last impression you get of this scene is the front grill of an oncoming minicar. Then space seems to flex around you, and... END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 14 Alley. SOUTHEAST 10 WEST 16 ;utility lot END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 14 You are in a narrow alleyway that runs along the north side of the closed warehouse. The alley dead-ends at a wire mesh fence to the west. Beyond this is the expanse of the utility lot. The north wall of the alley seperates you from the heavy traffic of the North One robo-gridway. The ground here is dusty. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 15 Transportation confluence. SOUTH 11 END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 15 You stand on a wide paved area where sky buses land. To the south you can see the towers of greater Centropolis. To the north are the rolling hills of the free range. On the northern horizon you can see the Chronos Tower. There is a sign by the skybus landing platform that tells you northbound skybuses come every half hour. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 16 East end of utility lot. EAST 14 ;alley WEST 17 ;you guessed it END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 16 The lot is quite expansive. There are several structures, sheds and such, fenced off within the lot. Everywhere are weeds and piles of sand and gravel. To the west you can see some sort of pillbox shaped structure, and beyond that, through the chemical haze of the west end, you can make out the towers and ships of the starport. To the east you can see the narrow entrance of an alley beyond the chainlink fence. Your own apartment building borders the lot to the south, and there is a gray door on that wall, though from where you stand, it appears to be shut. A doubled wired fence runs along the northern side of the lot, and beyond, the great trucks of the intercity roar past. There's considerable haze here, drifting over from the industrial lots to the south, and from the space port complex across the channel that lies just beyond the fenced in western boundary of this place. Never your favorite way to travel... very claustrophobic, but, if you had some place to go in Centropolis, convenient and, very important sometimes, free. All you need is your central transpo card... There is a gate with many passageways beyond it, and a city directory. The directory informs you that: Slideways 8, 10, 12 and 14 will take you to the administrative district; 1, 3, 7 and 13 will take you to the business district; and 4, 11 and 15 will take you to the malls. Do you need to go to any of those places? From this far northwest corner of town, any of those trips will take about fifteen minutes by slideway. What interests you most is that there is a shuttle every fifteen minutes to the Chronos Complex. All you need to travel is a transpo card. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 19 334rth Street. EAST 12 NORTH 20 END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 19 This is a little pedestrian side street. This section of town used to be posh, and the shops on this street were once pricey antique shops and the like. Now all are closed but one, and that is a small anonymous looking store to the north. The street dead-ends at a wire mesh fence to the west. Beyond this you can see the utility lot. To your east you can see the entry ramp to the underground slideways. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 20 Shop. NORTHEAST 10 END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 20 You step into the shop and up to the counter. The shop keeper recognizes you and tells you that your probe is repaired. He finds it under the counter and tells you about the work that he did on its sensors and floaters. END_ROOM_DESCR ROOM 21 The Chronos Pavillion. WEST 25 SOUTH 26 END_ROOM ROOM_DESCR 21 The Chronos Pavillion is a wide expanse of flagstone paving. There are rows of flowers, fountains, and pools with bridges. A great effort has gone into making this place splendorous. On the north side of the pavillion are the gates of the main building, and rising above them, the magnificent Chronos Tower. By the enormous clock on the tower you see the time. All around you is the bustle of excited activity, other cadets in graduation blacks, Chronos officers in finery, parents and friends of graduates. The pavillion is set among the fragrent pine woods of the Northern Preserve. There is a lone road stretching south toward the city, though overland traffic is fairly uncommon. There are exotic gardens to the west. END_ROOM_DESCR HELP 21 If you've gotten this far, congradulations. Assuming you have come carrying a weapon, a shield, your probe and some evidence and information about the timestream invasion, you may yet win the game. As you walk around the scene, regarding the dead and dying, you can't help but think that if you'd arrived a bit earlier, you might have prevented this catastrophe.
